Kano State Executive Council Approves Multibillion-Naira Capital Projects

The Kano State Executive Council, headed by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, has approved a comprehensive package of multibillion-naira capital projects aimed at addressing critical infrastructure and social needs across the state.

A statement issued by the Governor’s Spokesperson, Sunusi Bature, said the approvals span key sectors, including energy, water, transportation, environment, and humanitarian services —reflecting the administration’s continued commitment to improving public welfare and economic development.

Among the major highlights is the procurement of 500 modern electric tricycles under the Abba Gida Gida Mass Transport Empowerment and Employment Programme, valued at ₦3.7 billion.

The initiative is designed to enhance public transportation while creating employment opportunities for the youths.

To reinforce power infrastructure, the Council approved the supply and installation of two high-capacity generators, including synchronising ATS and MV panels at the Government House at the cost of ₦2.1 billion.

Additional power-related projects include laying of low voltage cables at the Government House at the cost of ₦393 million; stabilisation of electricity supply for the Regional Water Supply Scheme, which will cost ₦320 million; and the payment of offshore liabilities for the Tiga 10MW and Challawa 2x3MW Hydro Power Plants at $1 million (₦1.5 billion).

Others are settlement of operational debts for the hydro power plants at ₦94 million.

To address water scarcity, the government approved the payment of the Kano State Electricity Distribution Company’s (KEDCO) energy bills for March and April 2025, amounting to ₦188 million and ₦286 million, respectively, along with ₦713 million for diesel supply in May 2025 to keep water infrastructure operational.

In the environmental sector, the Council approved the commencement of the NEWMAP-EIB erosion control project at ₦300 million; construction of reinforced concrete drainage in Toranke, Ajingi Local Government Area, at ₦137 million; minor drainage works at Hotoron Arewa, Nassarawa Local Government Area at the cost of ₦185 million; and clearing of minor drainages across 88 wards in 8 metropolitan local government areas at ₦343 million.

Other key approvals include the construction of a mini stadium in Kwankwaso, Madobi Local Government Area, estimated at ₦152 million; the procurement of operational vehicles for KNUPDA at ₦244 million; and the expansion of contracts for road markings and crash barrier maintenance under the Urban Renewal Programme at the cost of ₦2.5 billion.

In a major humanitarian intervention, the Council approved the disbursement of ₦3 billion in Federal Government of Nigeria’s intervention funds to flood victims across the 44 local government areas and an additional ₦39 million worth of relief materials for those affected in Doguwa Local Government Area.

Lingering Water Shortage 

Governor Yusuf, during the Council meeting, expressed serious concern over the lingering water shortage in parts of the state. He issued a firm directive to all relevant agencies to take immediate corrective action, assuring them of full government support to resolve the crisis.

According to the Council, these wide-ranging approvals are part of a strategic roadmap to modernise Kano’s infrastructure and uplift the standard of living for all citizens.
