The Chief Press Secretary to the Kwara State Governor, Mallam Rafiu Ajakaye, has underscored the critical role of media unions in advocating for the welfare of journalists and addressing issues affecting the industry to promote a fairer society.

Ajakaye said this when the newly inaugurated executive members of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) paid him a courtesy visit in his office, Government House, Ilorin.

He stressed the need to prioritize journalists’ welfare, particularly given the low and often irregular salaries common in private media organizations.

Ajakaye described the inadequate support for journalists as concerning and urged professional associations to continuously advocate better conditions for their members.

The Chief Press Secretary also called for stronger collaboration between media unions and the state government, encouraging comprehensive media coverage of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s administration’s initiatives and programs.

She explained the unique responsibilities women face in both domestic and societal roles and requested continued government support to help them fulfill these responsibilities effectively.

Also speaking, former National Vice President of NAWOJ, Hajia Bilikis Oladimeji, emphasized the importance of addressing gender-related issues, which are a priority worldwide.
