Indonesia Dominates Lagos International Badminton Classics.

The 8th Lagos International Badminton Classics ended with Indonesia emerging dominant, sweeping the podium across categories and reaffirming its reputation as a global badminton powerhouse.

The final day featured high-tempo, thrilling matches with top-notch shuttle displays from world-class players. The event lived up to its billing as fans and athletes witnessed an electric atmosphere befitting one of Africa’s biggest badminton showcases.

A total prize money of $17,500 was at stake, raising the level of competitiveness and professionalism displayed by the finalists.

The mixed doubles final saw Indonesia’s Binto Prasetyo and Thesya Munggaren overpower India’s Ravat and Maneesha in straight sets (21-15, 21-17). The Indonesians stylishly dispatched the Indians to claim yet another title in an event they have consistently dominated.

In the Men’s Singles, the much-anticipated clash between Japan’s Minoru Koga and Indonesia’s Prahdiska Shujiwo had fans on the edge of their seats. Koga fought valiantly but Shujiwo’s relentless firepower prevailed.

The Indonesian secured a 21-15, 21-17 win to claim gold. The victory boosted Shujiwo’s international ranking from world No. 63, affirming him as one of badminton’s rising stars.

India’s Manraj Singh and Israel’s Dani Subovenko later settled for bronze in the Men’s Singles category.

India’s hopes for top honours came alive in the Women’s Singles, as an all-Indian final reinforced the nation’s standing. Defending champion Shreya Lele overcame compatriot Aakarship Kashyap 21-15, 21-17 to retain her title and secure back-to-back glory.

The Women’s Doubles final showcased Indonesia’s dominance again. Isyana Meida and Rinjani Nastine swept aside UAE’s Aleena Quathun and Sreejith Parol in just 25 minutes.

They sealed a convincing 21-18, 21-7 win, the shortest match of the day and a display of sheer artistry.

The Men’s Doubles final ended UAE’s last gold medal hopes as Ravikrishna and Rimdahoi fell to neutral pair Alimov and Ogloblin (21-15, 21-12).

For host nation Nigeria, pride came as Sofiat Obanisola and Zainab Damilola secured bronze in the Women’s Doubles.

They ensured the green and white was represented on the podium amid world-class competition.

The highlight of the evening was Indonesia’s golden sweep, celebrated passionately by athletes, officials and supporters. Indonesia’s ambassador to Nigeria, Bambang Suharto, personally presented the Men’s Singles trophy to Shujiwo.

The Indonesian anthem echoed several times through the Teslim Balogun Stadium hall, igniting waves of patriotism and celebration. The tournament reinforced Lagos as a hub for sports tourism, with athletes praising the Badminton Federation of Nigeria (BFN) for its organisation and hospitality.

Support from the Badminton World Federation (BWF) and Badminton Confederation of Africa (BCA) ensured global standards were maintained.

Badminton Federation of Nigeria (BFN) President, Francis Orbih, hailed the Lagos International Badminton Classics success, promising an even bigger 9th edition in 2026.

“The Lagos International Badminton Classics has once again proven Nigeria’s capacity to host world-class sporting events,” Orbih said.

“We are building a brand that showcases Africa’s talent, hospitality, and passion for badminton,”

The total prize money of $17,500 was shared among podium finishers.
