The Lagos State Government has warned residents against indiscriminate handling and storage of combustible materials particularly during this harmattan season and beyond.
The state called on residents to be conscious of their environment and report anyone keeping unwanted items that can jeopardize the safety of the people, to the appropriate quarters.
Safety of lives
The State’s Commissioner for Special Duties and Intergovernmental Relations, Mr. Olugbenga Oyerinde said “the Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration is committed to safety of lives and protection of citizenry that devoid of hazards.”
Oyerinde explained that it has become imperative to alert the public on the need to be more safety conscious, stressing the risks inherent in transporting and handling combustible materials, fuels, chemicals and other dangerous goods are huge, leading to quantum loss of lives, property and litigations.
Value for Lives
The Director General, Safety Commission, Mr. Lanre Mojola also maintained that value for lives cannot be quantified hence the need to be proactive to safeguard the lives and property.
He said that the Commission has commenced a ‘Safety For You’ campaign aimed at making safety a priority for everyone, as the campaign focuses on raising awareness and encouraging safety measures in personal, occupational and business contexts.
He said; “Stockpiles of chemicals and combustibles carry the risk of explosions and fire outbreaks under excessive temperature and pressure. And we must ensure that our safety and that of our neighbors is sacrosanct and advised members of the public to take responsibility. “When you see something, please say something. An injury to one is an injury to all.”
Mojola said officers of the Commission are already going round to ensure everywhere is safe for all and sundry, while urging artisans and tradesmen to seek professional advice on handling combustibles goods as well as moving them from one location to another within the State.
He however admonished the public to report stockpiles of any form of dangerous goods to 07000SAFETY or to the nearest security agencies.
