As political activities gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections, former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sule Lamido, has reaffirmed his loyalty to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) but expressed readiness to support any political alliance within or outside the party that priorities Nigeria’s unity and development.
Lamido, a two-term former governor of Jigawa State and prominent PDP chieftain, stated this in Kano during an interaction with journalists.
He said, “I remain a committed member of the PDP, and I won’t renounce my political history. However, I am open to working with any arrangement, whether within or outside the PDP, that can secure and save Nigeria.”
While dismissing speculations of defecting to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Lamido emphasized his deep-rooted connection to the PDP.
“I was detained, harassed, and maligned for the PDP. My office was burnt, my house was nearly set on fire, my friends and family humiliated. But the party also gave me the platform to serve as a governor and minister. I cannot abandon that legacy,” he stressed.
He, however, expressed disappointment over the party’s internal issues, calling for reforms and adherence to its constitution and guiding principles.
“If the PDP had strictly followed its rules and operated transparently, things would have been much better. The party must show that it belongs to all Nigerians, not just to individuals,” he said.
On the way forward, Lamido asserted, “The PDP can bounce back if it does the right thing and they know what the right thing is.”
State Creation:
Reacting to the ongoing constitutional review and calls for the creation of new states, Lamido described such agitations as legitimate but cautioned against viewing them as solutions to Nigeria’s deep-seated challenges.
“Creating more states will not solve our problems of insecurity, poverty, hunger, and national disunity. There are more pressing issues that need urgent attention,” he said.
Lamido reiterated his belief in Nigeria’s unity and his commitment to supporting any progressive move aimed at safeguarding the country’s future.
