Minister Seeks Counsel From Former Head Of State

The Minister of Defence, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru has sought professional advice from a former Head of State to accomplish the task of steering the affairs of the Ministry of Defence.

According to a statement by the Director Press and Public Relations, Mrs
Victoria Agba- Attah, the Minister paid a courtesy visit to the former Military Head of State, General Abdulsalam Abubakar, and the former Chief of Defence Staff, General Martin Luther Agwai at their residences in Abuja.

Briefing the former Nigerian leaders, he intimated to them that given the task and responsibilities ahead of him in the strategic Ministry, it was necessary for him and his Minister of State to consult and tap from their wealth of knowledge.

Alhaji Badaru said, “he would not relent in his efforts of wider consultations with elders and former Nigerian leaders on how to tackle the current security challenges facing the nation.”

The Defence Minister commended the former Head of State General Abdulsalam Abubakar who was also the head of ECOWAS special envoy to Niger Republic for his gigantic efforts to restore peace and overcome the current political impasse in that country.

General Abubakar is Nigeria’s former Military Head of State from 1998 to 1999, a renowned elder statesman, and a peace Ambassador for ECOWAS and the United Nations.

General Martin Luther Agwai served the nation at one point in his career as the Commander of the combined United Nations- African Union Peacekeeping Force in Darfur. He has also served as Nigeria’s Chief of Staff and Chief of Defence Staff respectively.

The leaders commended President Ahmed Bola Tinubu for appointing Badaru as Minister of Defence, describing him as a great achiever.

They wished him a successful tenure as the Minister of Defence.
