Nigeria’s aviation and telecoms sectors have recorded a major milestone as MTN Nigeria, in partnership with the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), officially launched free high-speed Wi-Fi services at key international airports across the country.
The service is now live at Terminal 2 of Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, and at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, marking the first phase of a nationwide airport connectivity rollout.
Speaking at the launch, MTN’s Chief Enterprise Business Officer, Lynda Saint-Nwafor, described the initiative as a strong example of public–private collaboration aimed at improving passenger experience and expanding digital access in public spaces.
According to her, “Connectivity is no longer a luxury but a critical enabler of modern life. The free airport Wi-Fi service will allow travellers to conduct business, access vital information, communicate with loved ones, and remain productive while in transit.” She stated.
Saint-Nwafor also noted that airports serve as gateways to opportunity and convergence points for business travellers, tourists, airport staff and service providers — all of whom require seamless and dependable internet access.
She pointed out that over the coming weeks, on-ground engagements will be activated at the Lagos and Abuja airports to drive awareness and encourage usage.
Beyond internet access, she explained that the Wi-Fi platform is analytics-enabled, providing insights into usage patterns and peak periods to support improved service delivery and planning, while remaining fully compliant with privacy and data protection regulations.
“For FAAN, this elevates service standards. For travellers, it delivers convenience and productivity. For MTN, it reinforces our commitment to national infrastructure development and digital inclusion,” she said.
In her remarks, FAAN Managing Director/Chief Executive, Mrs Olubunmi Kuku, described the launch as a defining moment for Nigeria’s airport modernisation drive.
According to her, the initiative represents more than connectivity; it sets a new benchmark for digital infrastructure within the country’s aviation ecosystem.
She highlighted the practical impact of the service, noting that modern airports are hubs of economic and human activity where passengers rely on real-time communication, from business executives closing deals and students submitting applications, to families sharing travel moments and diplomats preparing for engagements.
“For too long, passengers experienced the frustration of being disconnected when connection mattered most. Today, we change that story,” she stated.
Kuku said the partnership aligns with the Federal Government’s digital economy agenda under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and supports the modernisation vision of the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo.
She emphasised that the collaboration demonstrates how innovation and strategic partnerships can accelerate infrastructure upgrades without relying solely on public funding.
FAAN also announced plans to extend the service to the temporary terminal at MMIA, followed by international airports in Enugu, Port Harcourt and Kano, with the long-term goal of ensuring no Nigerian airport remains digitally disconnected.
Both organisations reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s aviation competitiveness and delivering world-class passenger experience through sustainable public–private collaboration.
With the signal now live, travellers at the Lagos and Abuja international airports can access free, reliable Wi-Fi — a move stakeholders say signals a new chapter of innovation, accessibility and shared value in Nigerian aviation.
