MTN Nigeria says it plans to strategise and adopt the Application Programming Interface (API) Technology to boost its customer services.

MTN’s Chief Information Officer, Information Technology, Shoyinka Shodunke made this known at the 2023 Africa Internet Governance Forum (AIGF) holding in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.

Shodunke said the MTN was transforming lives from telco into another telco to ensure every service rendered would come through API technology, adding that to drive the API technology is to ensure having data lake.

He said the theme of the programme,”Transforming Africa’s Digital Landscape: Empowering Inclusion, Security, and Innovation” resonates with MTN’s strategy, adding that there are a lot of synergy going on within the industry.

“At the moment, we are about the biggest in terms of the sort of warehouse data we do hold. We have about seven petabytes of data in which we process on a daily basis. We process about 200 million data types on a daily basis.

“We are transforming ourselves, from that telco into a telco by ensuring that every service that we do render will come in through API technology.“

On the issue of 5G, Shodunke said by 2025, MTN would move from the traditional space it was and start providing connectivity far and beyond.

“Our ambition 2025 is a strategy that is guiding us to ensure that by 2025 we move from our traditional space which is providing connectivity and start providing services far beyond connectivity.

“Today we have about six per cent of our subscriber base using the 5g technology. We see 5g as a key enabler in terms of the strategy we have drawn up for ourselves.

“We see ourselves as a technology which is a key driver into that because as part of that ambition, we will be pushing out platforms that will ensure that we enable ecosystem collaborations across.

“We now move from the sort of traditional role in which we used to play which was just connectivity, we now start providing facilitation within the ecosystem.“
