The Director General, National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Professor Mojisola Christiana Adeyeye has commended the Kano State Consumer Protection Council (KSCPC), for it’s dogged fight against fake drugs and unwholesome foods in order to safeguard lives of people in the state.
The NAFDAC boss gave the commendation during a site inspection of the store were confiscated fake drugs running into hundreds of millions of Naira were kept, at the Bompai industrial layout of the ancient city, awaiting destruction.
It would be recalled that KSCPC in a single day operation, seized over 200 million naira worth of fake and expired drugs in the state in February.
She said the collaborative effort made so far by the KSCPC to stem the tide of fake drugs consumption in the state, which is allowed by the nation’s law, the T34, is marvellous and encouraging, since NAFDAC cannot cover everywhere in the country.
Professor Adeyeye, then urged states across the federation to emulate Kano state and constitute a consumer protection agency to enhance the countinous war against fake drugs in the country.
“With what we have seen here and all these seizures, the agency is doing a marvellous work.”
“This is what all states in the federation should be doing because NAFDAC cannot have it’s eyes all over.”
“The collaboration between NAFDAC and the state Tsskforce is what we would wish for all states to have, that way, we are keeping bad and dangerous medicine that can harm our people of the road, thereby safeguarding their lives,” said Adeyeye.
He urged intending drug manufacturers with good hearts to apply, get screend and registered after meeting the world class standards put in place by the Agency, so that quality drugs can be manufactured send sold in and out of the country.
“By this Nigeria can have more money through foreign exchange and our people can get employed, but most times, they don’t want to abide by the quality requirementsts. That is why most times they bye pass NAFDAC but the long arms of the awaits such people,”warned Adeyeye.
The Acting Chairman of the KSCPC who also doubles as the MD of the Kano State Road and Traffic Agency, KAROTA, Baffa Dan Agundi said the seized drugs will soon be destroyed, having gone through all legal processes, obtained necessary documents and authority to carry out the exercise.
“We have possessed all the needed warrant and documents on the siezed items ,we are now awaiting to burn them,’ said Dan Agundi
The Director General was accompanied on the visit by the head Federal Taskforce on Fake and Counterfeit Drugs, other senior NAFDAC officials and other stakeholders.
