The first National Economic Council meeting for the year started on Thursday morning with Vice President Yemi Osinbajo presiding over it from the State House.

The virtual meeting is expected to discuss insecurity in some parts of the country and other issues.

Covid-19 top on the agenda
Deliberations at the meeting might focus on efforts to contain the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic across Nigeria.

At the Council’s meeting in November last year, Governors of the states were urged to enforce the non-pharmaceutical guidelines to check its spread.

Governors may therefore report on enforcement of the guidelines and citizens’ compliance with them.

The meeting is also expected to review infections in the states with a view to determining the increase or decrease in numbers of those infected by the virus.

Governors and other members of the NEC joined the virtual meeting from their state capitals.
