The Nigerian Navy is set to establish a naval base in Yauri, Kebbi State to enhance maritime security in the region.

The decision was made by an high-powered delegation of the Naval led by Rear Admiral Patrick Nwatu on a visit to Kebbi State for the inspection of the site.

Governor Idris welcomed the initiative, describing it as a “very welcome development.”

He noted that Kebbi State has never had a naval base before, despite having the River Niger crisscrossing its landmass, which requires adequate maritime security.

The governor assured the Navy of the state’s co-operation and promised to provide a temporary site and accommodation to facilitate the establishment of the base.

The Navy’s delegation explained that the proposed base is part of a strategic expansion of maritime security in the hinterland.

The River Niger is a vital waterway that has been exploited by criminal elements for the transportation of weapons and men with malicious intentions.

The naval base will enable the Navy to take proactive and counter-measures against banditry and other forms of criminality in the region.

We have never had a Naval Base before, and this is a very welcome development. We shall provide the Navy with a temporary site and accommodation to start operation,” Governor Nasir Idris said.

The establishment of the naval base is expected to enhance security and stability in Kebbi State and the surrounding region.
