NAWOJ Honours Women, Institutions in Anambra State

Women from various walks of life gathered at the Professor Dora Akunyili Women Development Centre in Awka to commemorate the 2026 International Women’s Day, in an event organised by the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Anambra State chapter.

The celebration, themed “Justice Action for All Women and Girls, Give to Gain,”  brought together participants adorned in colourful attire, symbolising unity and shared purpose. Beyond the ceremonial display, the event focused on recognising contributions of women and supportive institutions across different sectors.

Among those recognised were the Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, Ikioye Orutugu, who received the “Firepower with Finesse Policing Award,” alongside other individuals and organisations acknowledged for their roles in philanthropy, entrepreneurship, and community development.

Delivering the keynote address, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Paul University, Awka, Professor Stella Okunna, called for increased awareness among women regarding their rights and opportunities. She urged women to be proactive in asserting themselves while encouraging society to create more inclusive opportunities.

She noted that women possess the capacity to contribute meaningfully to national development and emphasized the importance of mutual support among women in advancing progress.

In her remarks, the NAWOJ State Chairperson, Comrade Tochukwu Ifejika, said the recognition of achievers was intended to inspire younger generations by showcasing credible role models.

She reiterated the need for greater female representation in governance and decision-making processes.

Ifejika also called for equity, stressing that women seek inclusion and opportunities to contribute to societal development.
Chairperson of the occasion, Oge Ekweozor, commended NAWOJ for organising the event and acknowledged participants for their commitment to promoting women’s advancement.

Some of the women highlighted during the event included the Vice Chancellor of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Professor Kate Omenugha; the Executive Chairman of the Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board, Dr Vera Nwadinobi; Mrs Helen Eze of Tenderlove Community Children’s Home; broadcaster Ify Aronu; and Nollywood actress Ngozi Ezeonu.

In their remarks, honourees expressed appreciation for the recognition and encouraged women to pursue professional growth while maintaining balance in other aspects of life.

The event also featured cultural displays and a dance presentation by NAWOJ members, alongside participation from various women’s groups, including the Nigeria League of Women Voters, the National Council of Women Societies, the Association of Muslim Women in Anambra State, and the Police Officers’ Wives Association.

The gathering underscored the broader message of International Women’s Day promoting inclusion, recognising contributions, and strengthening efforts toward gender equity across society.
