NAWOJ, NCWS Welcome Judgement on Baby Defilement Case

The Nasarawa state chapter of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists NAWOJ and National Council for Women’s Societies, NCWS has welcomed the judgment delivered by Nasarawa State Chief Judge, Justice Aisha Mohammed Bashir for sentencing one Ahmadu Yaro to 21 years in prison for defiling a 3 month-old baby.

Chairperson of NAWOJ, Comrade Hadiza Umar and the President of NCWS, Mrs. Mary Meshi, hailed the verdict during an interview with Journalists in Lafia, the state capital.

Deterrent to perpetrators

According to Comrade Hadiza and Mrs . Meshi, the 21years jail term is a significant step towards protecting children’s rights and promoting a safer society, noting that it will serve as deterrent to perpetrators of sexual and gender based violence.

They commended the judiciary for upholding justice and ensuring that perpetrators of such acts are held accountable for their actions.

The Women Groups reiterates their commitment to supporting victims of gender-based violence, advocating for their rights, and appealing for anyone who has experienced or witnessed such abuse to report to authorities concerns for justice and support they needed.
