The visit aimed to update the NCC on the association’s initiatives to curb piracy, following a Memorandum of Understanding signed between the two organizations a few months ago. Asein praised the association for its proactive approach, stating, “I commend you for your boldness in rolling out these initiatives and seeking further collaboration. Your commitment sets a strong example for others in the book industry.”

He highlighted the goal of reducing piracy to single digits and commended the association for organizing workshops and seminars on copyright issues. The NCC plans to endorse the association’s activities by scheduling its own sensitization events in Aba.

Asein assured that the NCC is committed to enhancing anti-piracy measures, including providing maximum protection for publishers who subscribe to the hologram system. “Whenever we identify a title with our hologram, the NCC will take action to uphold the authority granted by the New Copyright Act,” he affirmed.

He further explained that finalizing a collaboration strategy with the Nigerian Customs Service will streamline the importation process for legitimate businesses.

Mr. Ugwonwa Ikechukwu, Chairman of the association, acknowledged the NCC’s support, noting a significant reduction in piracy in their market. He mentioned that many importers have left the area due to increased enforcement against illegal activities.

Mr. Okere Chigozie, a shareholder, also shared that the task force has successfully implemented instructions to curb the importation of pirated works. He noted improvements through seminars held in the market to educate people on copyright laws and the consequences of piracy. Chigozie emphasized that publishers are experiencing increased patronage, thanks to the NCC’s ongoing inspections and collaborative efforts.
