The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Lagos Operations Office, has distributed relief materials to communities affected by the devastating flood disaster that occurred in Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State, Southwest Nigeria.

Mr. Afunku Azeez, the Assistant Director, Relief and Rehabilitation, represented the Head of NEMA Lagos Operations Office, on behalf of the Director–General, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, on Saturday at Isale Odo, one of the distribution centres.

Umar listed the relief items as rice, garri, spaghetti, vegetable oil, tomato paste, and seasoning cubes.

Umar expressed heartfelt sympathy to the victims of the flood disaster on behalf of the Federal Government.

She acknowledged that the disaster had a devastating impact, displacing several families and causing material losses amounting to millions of naira. Umar commended the cordial and effective collaboration between NEMA and other state agencies, which played a crucial role in mitigating the aftermath of the recent flood incidents.

She emphasised that the distribution exercise aims to provide much-needed relief to affected households and support their recovery, as the agencies continue to work together to prevent future occurrences and improve disaster preparedness.

Also speaking, Mr. Shonuga Adeniyi, the Assistant Director of Procurement, Lagos State Ministry of Agriculture and Food Systems, commended President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to helping flood victims.

“This support has tremendous impact on affected communities. We have received similar interventions in the past, and it is encouraging to see this sustained commitment,” Adeniyi said.

Also speaking, Chief Olalekan James, the Chairman of the Canal Project in Alimosho LGA, lauded the Federal Government for its concern for residents.

“This is Agbado Oke-Odo versus Ayobo-Ipaja axis, where people were badly hit by floods. We give kudos to the Federal Government for this intervention and appreciate the media for covering this effort,” he said.

The Vice Chairman of the Canal Project, Mr. Esho Joseph, commended the Federal Government for the initiative.

“Tinubu has put smiles on the faces of flood victims. We also commend NEMA and Lagos State Ministries, Departments, and Agencies for their immense support to Alimosho communities,” Joseph said.

One of the beneficiaries, Mr. Lusado Babatunde, expressed gratitude for the relief, urging the government to also prioritise infrastructure.

“We appreciate this support. We also appeal for the construction of roads in our area to allow proper water channelling to the canals,” he said.

The targeted LGAs include Alimosho, Ojo, Agege, Eti-Osa, Kosofe, Ikeja, Oshodi, and Ikorodu LGAs.

The official flag-off of the distribution exercise had earlier taken place at Oniru Waterfront in Eti-Osa LGA. The event was held in collaboration with the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, the State Ministry of Agriculture, and officials of Eti-Osa Local Government.
