The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has called for greater collaboration with journalists to deepen public understanding of the nation’s power sector, emphasising the media’s critical role in consumer education and industry reforms.

Speaking during a courtesy visit by the Power Correspondents Association of Nigeria (PCAN), NERC Chairman, Musiliu Oseni, urged journalists covering the electricity sector to leverage their access to information to promote accurate, insightful, and educative reporting.

Oseni noted that “Effective communication of policies, regulations, and sector developments is essential to bridging the knowledge gap between industry stakeholders and electricity consumers.”

He added that well-informed media coverage would not only enhance public awareness but also foster trust and support for ongoing reforms within the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI).

According to Oseni, as the power sector continues to undergo transformation, the role of journalists becomes increasingly important in simplifying complex regulatory frameworks and operational issues for the average Nigerian.

The NERC boss also welcomed PCAN’s offer of collaboration, describing it as a strategic partnership that could strengthen transparency, accountability, and consumer engagement in the sector.

In his remarks, PCAN Chairman Obas Esiedesa commended the Commission for its strides in digital transparency and proactive dissemination of data. He said that improved access to information has significantly aided journalists in delivering more accurate and timely reports on the power sector.

Esiedesa reaffirmed the association’s commitment to enhancing the depth, quality, and accuracy of electricity sector reporting, noting that responsible journalism remains key to shaping public perception and supporting sectoral growth.

The engagement underscores a shared commitment between regulators and the media to promote informed discourse, empower consumers, and support the sustainable development of Nigeria’s electricity industry.
