The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) has reaffirmed its commitment to deepening democratic values and promoting inclusive governance, as the nation marks Democracy Day in remembrance of the historic June 12, 1993, elections.

In a statement signed by its Chairman, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara State, the Forum congratulated Nigerians and joined President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other national stakeholders in honouring the memory of heroes and heroines who championed the struggle for democratic rule.

“June 12 is a watershed in our national history. “We therefore join President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, and other stakeholders to honour our heroes and heroines who played significant roles in the struggle for democratic rule.” AbdulRazaq stated.

While acknowledging the strides made in the 26 years of uninterrupted democratic governance, the governors also noted the need to sustain dialogue and collaboration in addressing national challenges.

“Our nation like every other human community, has its challenges and aspirations. Together, we can leverage constructive dialogue and all other democratic mechanisms to engage one another for better outcomes,” the statement read in part.

The Forum pledged to work with the Federal Government, civil society organizations, and other partners to expand democratic participation and promote peace and prosperity across the country.

“As leaders of our people, we commit ourselves to working with all stakeholders… to widen the democratic space and make our country more fertile for sustainable peace and inclusive prosperity,” AbdulRazaq added.

The NGF wished Nigerians a peaceful and reflective Democracy Day.
