Niger State solicits for more support for IDPs

The Government of Niger State in North central Nigeria, has solicited for more support to cater for the needs of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the State.

Deputy Governor, Yakubu Garba made the appeal when he paid a working visit to the Director General, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mustapha Habib, in Abuja, Nigeria.

Mr. Garba said banditry has led to the displacement of no fewer than 5,000 persons in the state, noting that the State acknowledges the continuous relief supports delivered by NEMA but said more were still needed for the displaced persons, especially to cater for their basic needs.

He also said the visit was to discuss on ways the State Government and the Agency can work together towards mitigating against likelihood of flood as contained in the 2023 Seasonal Climate Prediction and Annual Flood Outlook.

Responding, the Director General, NEMA, Mustapha Ahmed assured of the Agency’s continued support to disaster affected persons nationwide.

He further commended the Niger State Government for being alert to the 2023 flood prediction, adding that every necessary actions should be taken to mitigate against anticipated impact of the disaster.
