The Nigerian government has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic collapse of the Rubaya Coltan Mine in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), which claimed more than 200 lives and left many others injured.
In a statement issued by the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa, Nigeria conveyed its heartfelt condolences to the Government and people of the DRC, particularly the families of those who lost their lives in the devastating incident.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, on behalf of the Government and people of Nigeria, also expressed sympathy to those injured and to the affected communities, praying for the speedy recovery of the wounded.
Nigeria noted with concern reports that the collapse followed heavy rainfall and largely affected artisanal miners and residents in the area.
The tragedy, the statement said, highlights the humanitarian challenges faced by vulnerable communities in resource-rich regions, as well as the dangers associated with unsafe and informal mining practices.
The Nigerian Government reaffirmed its solidarity with the Democratic Republic of the Congo and commended the efforts of local authorities and emergency responders in recovering victims, providing medical care to the injured, and ensuring the safety of affected populations.
Nigeria assured the DRC that its thoughts and prayers remain with the Government and people of the country during this difficult period.
