Nigeria has endorsed the newly launched Global Governance Initiative (GGI), unveiled by China at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Plus meeting in Tianjin, positioning the country at the forefront of efforts to shape reforms in the global order.

The initiative builds on the Global Development Initiative (GDI), Global Security Initiative (GSI), and Global Civilization Initiative (GCI), with a focus on broader representation, adherence to international law, and stronger responses to challenges such as climate change, digital inequality, and emerging technologies.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, Nigeria described the initiative as a timely contribution ahead of the United Nations’ 80th anniversary.

“Nigeria, one of Africa’s largest economies and an active participant in multilateral diplomacy, views the GGI as a valuable platform for advancing shared priorities, including reform of the United Nations, inclusive governance in emerging domains such as artificial intelligence, cyberspace, and outer space, and the promotion of equitable development,” Ebienfa said.

He noted that Nigeria particularly welcomed the initiative’s emphasis on five foundational principles: Sovereign Equality, Rule of Law, Multilateralism, People-Centered Governance, and Results-Oriented Action.

Ebienfa stressed that the GGI aligned with Nigeria’s national development objectives, its principle of strategic autonomy, and the African Union’s Agenda 2063.

“In this regard, Nigeria remains committed to working collaboratively with partners across the Global South to foster consensus, strengthen regional cooperation, and contribute meaningfully to a sustainable and equitable global order,”he explained.

Reaffirming Nigeria’s stance, Ebienfa said: “Through its support for the GGI, Nigeria reaffirms its enduring commitment to a more just, inclusive, and effective international order, one that reflects the aspirations of all peoples and upholds the principles of shared responsibility and mutual respect.”
