Nigeria and the European Union have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening broad-based cooperation in areas including trade and investment, peace and security, governance, climate action, the digital economy, agriculture, education, health, humanitarian assistance and people-to-people exchanges.
The understanding was reached when the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dunoma Ahmed, received the European Union Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Mr Gautier Mignot, for talks aimed at deepening bilateral relations.

Ambassador Ahmed described the EU as a critical development partner and expressed satisfaction with the positive trajectory of relations. He reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to economic diversification, with a focus on agriculture, the digital economy, climate-smart development and innovation.

He also highlighted Nigeria’s leadership role in promoting regional peace and security, particularly in West Africa, and welcomed continued EU cooperation in counter-terrorism, maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea and post-conflict recovery.

On climate change and migration, Ambassador Ahmed called for increased EU support for climate adaptation, energy transition, access to climate finance, green technology transfer and humane, cooperative migration frameworks with an emphasis on youth empowerment.
In his remarks, Ambassador Mignot commended the strong alignment between Nigeria’s priorities and the EU’s objectives, describing 2026 as a pivotal year for expanding cooperation.

He announced plans for a proposed Nigeria–EU Ministerial Meeting scheduled to hold in Abuja in March 2026 and highlighted the EU’s Global Gateway Strategy, which supports investments in infrastructure, digital connectivity, clean energy, agriculture and youth-focused programmes.
Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to multilateralism, the rule of law and sustained dialogue, expressing confidence in the continued strengthening of Nigeria–EU relations.
