“Nigeria needs to harness, promote Cashew Industry” – Former President Obasanjo

A former Nigerian president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, says the country needs to harness and promote the benefits derived from the cashew industry.
Chief Obasanjo said this during the ongoing 16th Edition of the Annual Conference of the African Cashew Alliance holding in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.
“10 percent of cashew produced is processed in the country.
“Some people are taking advantage of our own hard labour in production.
“They add value to it and they get more money from it than we should have got if we produced, processed it and marketed.
“I give them a challenge that we should give ourselves what I call a twenty, thirty committee for policy, for production, for processing, for promotion and indeed for research because there is a lot we can get from research.
“No aspect of cashew from the roots to the leaves should be wasted. And that is what research and innovation should be doing,” he said.
The Cameroonian Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Mr. Gabriel Mbairobe, while speaking on effort being made in promoting cashew trade on the African continent, said as the President of Consultative International Cashew Council, the Council is working together with eleven countries to improve cashew production in Africa.
“As Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, I’m very proud, we can do better in the cashew sub-sector,” he assured.
