Nigeria, Pakistan Commit to Post-Harvest Losses Reduction
The Vice-Chancellor of PMAS-Arid Agriculture University Rawalpindi, Pakistan (PMAS-AAUR), Dr. Qamar-uz-Zaman, has disclosed that Nigerian and Pakistani experts will discuss ways to reduce post-harvest losses.
Zaman, while highlighting the bilateral relationship between Pakistan and Nigeria during a policy dialogue on enhancing relations and cooperation between the two countries, described the agriculture sector as the backbone of the economy of both countries.
According to him, postharvest losses of food are around 30 per cent, leaving about 80 million tons of fruits and vegetables lost, adding that to overcome the losses, Nigeria needs to focus more on improving productivity, preservation, and supply chain from farm to fork.
Also, Zaman pointed out that PMAS-AAUR can help Nigeria in adopting precision agriculture, saying his institute has a state of the art centre for precision agriculture.
On her part, Coordinator of the Nigerian delegate, Mrs. Asabe Mustafa, said Nigeria would develop new policies to overcome the challenge of food wastage, among other problems bedeviling its agriculture sector.
