On Thursday, the Nigerian Army awarded Ibrahim Daniel Arome, a disability activist and social media influencer from Kogi State, for his efforts in promoting a culture of security awareness through social media. The Army recognised Arome for his responsible online behavior that contributes to national security.
During the 38th Edition of the Nigerian Army Social Media Seminar, held to honor youth in Kogi State for their responsible online conduct regarding security awareness, Major General Nosakhare C. Ugbo, the Chief of Civil-Military Affairs (CCMA) of the Nigerian Army, and the special guest of honor, Major General Adeleke A. Ayannuga, urged the youth to use social media responsibly to foster peace and strengthen national unity.
General Ugbo explained that the seminar aimed to promote responsible online behavior that enhances national security. He emphasized the importance of educating citizens to mitigate potential security threats and risks through responsible digital engagements.
While addressing participants, Brigadier General Bola S. Keji, representing General Ugbo, stressed the need for collaboration to create a safer and more informed online community. He stated, “We must recognize that our words and actions echo far beyond our devices. Each post, share, and comment can either support or hinder our collective efforts for a united Nigeria. We should use this power responsibly, ensuring our digital footprints contribute to a legacy of peace and prosperity.”
Award recipient Daniel Arome expressed that this recognition rekindled his hope for a better Nigeria, where security is a shared responsibility amid ongoing national security challenges. “This award has indeed renewed my commitment to advocating for security online, and I will continue to raise awareness as an influencer,” he stated.
Arome emphasised, “Disability is merely an impairment, not a barrier,” referencing his 2014 slogan, “BRAIN NOT LEGS.” He reiterated his commitment to enhancing the lives of people with disabilities and stated that security awareness is crucial, even on social media.
General Ayannuga, Commander of the Nigerian Army Cyber Warfare Command, praised the attendees for their commitment to positive online behavior that can improve national security. He noted that the seminar serves as an essential platform aimed at empowering Nigerian youth with the knowledge necessary for non-kinetic initiatives to enhance national security. “This seminar aims to equip the talented young minds of Kogi State with critical information to foster a safe and secure society,” he said, expressing optimism that the seminar’s outcomes would enhance security and economic development in both Kogi State and the North-Central Region.
Kogi State Governor Alhaji Ahmed Ododo commended the Nigerian Army for organizing the seminar during a time of evolving security challenges. He acknowledged the significant role social media plays in shaping public perceptions and driving discussions on important issues like national security. “Security awareness is a collective responsibility that requires ongoing engagement, education, and collaboration across all sectors of society. Our approach to building this awareness must adapt to current trends, utilizing platforms that resonate with today’s generation, with social media at the forefront of these efforts,” Ododo stated.
He emphasised that collaboration between the Nigerian Army, state governments, civil society organizations, and the private sector is essential to ensure that social media remains a space for positive engagement and growth. “Together, we can harness the power of social media to build a more secure and united Nigeria.”
