The Headquarters of the 8 Division, Nigerian Army (NA), Sokoto, has organised a solemn interdenominational church service to pray for increased support for troops and personnel across all formations and units in the country.

The ceremony, held simultaneously across military formations nationwide, was both symbolic and spiritual, drawing high-ranking officers, families, and members of the public together in thanksgiving and reflection to mark the Nigerian Army’s 162nd anniversary.

Addressing the congregation at the service in Giginya Cantonment, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding national sovereignty, tackling insecurity, and supporting peace and development in the country.

He expressed gratitude to Almighty God for the remarkable progress and achievements recorded over the Army’s 162 years of existence. “The Nigerian Army at 162 remains a cornerstone of our national defence. Our troops continue to demonstrate professionalism, resilience, and sacrifice in counterterrorism, peacekeeping, and civil support operations,” he stated.

The COAS paid tribute to the fallen heroes, including the former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, who passed away in November 2024. “While we feel the pain of our loss, we take solace in God’s will. We honour those who paid the supreme price and pray for their families,” he added.

Reflecting on the Army’s transformation agenda, Lieutenant General Oluyede highlighted the ongoing implementation of the “Soldier First” philosophy, which places troop welfare at the heart of military reform and strategic planning.

He also extended appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his continuous support, as well as to state governors, ministers, the National Assembly, and international partners for their contributions to the Army’s progress.

Represented by the General Officer Commanding 8 Division and Commander Sector 2 North West Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Major General Ibikunle Ajose, the COAS specifically thanked governors in security-challenged states such as Katsina, Sokoto, Zamfara, and Kebbi for their cooperation and assistance in joint efforts to enhance security.

In his sermon during the service, the Deputy Director, Chaplain Service (Protestant), 8 Division, Lieutenant Colonel Reverend Yakubu David, offered prayers for divine intervention in Nigeria’s affairs. He called for unity, peace, and steadfast faith in God’s plan. “Against every plot by the enemy, we declare victory. Nigeria will rise again,” Reverend David declared.

The theme of this year’s anniversary, “Developing the Soldier First Concept: Imperative for Nigerian Army Transformation Drive,” reflects the Army’s renewed focus on enhancing operational capabilities and aligning with contemporary security challenges.

The event was attended by Principal Staff Officers of the Division, senior officers, personnel from sister security agencies, the Chairperson of the Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association (NAOWA), 8 Division Chapter, Mrs Ndidi-Meg Ajose, other NAOWA members, soldiers, and their families.
