Somalia’s National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) says its operatives have killed nine members of al-Shabaab and destroyed equipment used for making explosives during operations in the Lower Shabelle region.

In a statement, NISA said the actions followed coordinated attacks on the al-Qaeda-linked group in southern Somalia.

The agency said; “the first operation took place in Kuunyo Barrow, where a key militant facility was targeted. Six large generators allegedly used in the production of improvised explosive devices were destroyed.”

According to NISA, six fighters, including senior operatives, were killed during the raid.

A second operation was carried out near Tugaareey, where militants were hiding in a forested area. Three additional fighters were killed, while others fled.

NISA said that”the operations are part of ongoing efforts to weaken al-Shabaab’s capacity and dismantle its infrastructure across the country.”

The agency added that similar operations would continue until threats posed by al-Shabaab and militants linked to the Islamic State group are eliminated.

Al-Shabaab, an affiliate of al-Qaeda, regularly carries out attacks against government targets, security forces, and civilians as part of its campaign to overthrow the federal government in Mogadishu and impose its interpretation of Islamic law.
