NPFL: Akwa United Extends Winning Run Against Kano Pillars
Akwa United extended it’s winning run against the Kano Pillars to seven games after a vital 1-0 victory, courtesy of a goal from striker Ndifreke Effiong in match day 7 of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL), at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria.
The homegrown striker rose high and headed home a superb cross by right-back Etboy Akpan in the 29th minute of an entertaining first half in Uyo.
Akwa United totally dominated the first half and could have led by a wider margin at the break. Effiong’s fourth goal in seven matches takes the Nigeria U-23 international joint top in the top scorer’s standing, alongside Sunshine Stars forward Sadeeq Yusuf.
Akwa United played the game without it’s head coach Kennedy Boboye who observed a one-match ban after he was penalized for his unsportsmanlike comments after his team’s loss to Heartland last Sunday.
His first assistant Jolomi Atune oversaw Saturday’s game and the former Warri Wolves assistant coach said his team were fully deserving of all three points.
“It is a deserved win for us and everyone could see that. What we did today is what we have always done. We only tried to improve on it more and on our technicalities today and we saw good football,” Atune said.
Up next for Akwa United is a trip to Gombe for a date with Adamawa United, while Kano Pillars will face Jigawa Golden Stars at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium on Wednesday.
