The Chairman of the Nigerian Unionsts (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, Grace Ike, has called on journalists in the FCT to embrace unity, ethical professionalism and renewed commitment as they step into the year 2026.In a New Year message to members of the Council, Ike commended journalists for their resilience, courage and dedication in the past year, describing 2025 as a period that tested the collective resolve of media practitioners in the nation’s capital.
She noted that despite the challenges, members of the NUJ FCT Council remained steadfast in upholding the ideals of the journalism profession, stressing that their role as custodians of truth and the conscience of society has become even more critical.
According to her, the New Year presents an opportunity for journalists to reset, refocus and re-energise their collective purpose, especially in shaping public narratives, strengthening democracy and promoting national cohesion.
Looking ahead to 2026, the NUJ FCT Chairman assured members that the Council would intensify efforts aimed at improving welfare, promoting professional development and strengthening unity among journalists. She pledged continued advocacy for better working conditions, capacity-building programmes and institutional support to enable members thrive in an evolving media landscape.
Ike also emphasised the importance of ethical journalism, particularly at a time when misinformation and disinformation threaten public trust in the media. She urged journalists to recommit to accuracy, fairness, balance and integrity, while remaining guided by the Code of Ethics of the profession.
She further underscored the need for solidarity within the Council, noting that unity, mutual respect and shared purpose remain the foundation for building a strong and responsive NUJ FCT Council.
The NUJ FCT Chairman encouraged members to approach 2026 with optimism, innovation and responsibility, while remaining steadfast in service to the public interest.
On behalf of the Council’s leadership, Ike wished journalists and their families a peaceful, fulfilling and prosperous New Year, praying that 2026 would bring good health, professional fulfilment and collective success.
