Corps Members in the thirty-seven NYSC Orientation Camps across the country in display of patriotism which the Scheme has espoused in 48 years embarked on a Unity March, on Saturday 5th June , 2021. This is aimed at developing national ethos among Nigerians, anchored on patriotism, selfless service and commitment to national development.
While flagging off the march at the NYSC Orientation Camp, Nasarawa State in Keffi, the Director-General of the Scheme, Brigadier General Shuaibu Ibrahim informed the Corps Members that the Scheme was established to promote National unity and integration.
According to a statement by Deputy Director, Press and Public Relations of NYSC, Emeka Mgbemena, Director General of NYSC revealed that, over five million Nigerians have passed through the NYSC since inception, adding that there was the need to sensitize Nigerians on the importance of national cohesion, irrespective of religious and tribal differences.
“In diversity there is strength, we must be united to promote national unity. We should stay together, work together and sustain our country, so as to move from strength to strength”. Let the spirit of the NYSC live in us all.
“Don’t use the social media to spread fake news, but use it to promote peaceful co-existence”, he said.
Speaking further, Ibrahim acknowledged that Corps Members are very important, educated and vibrant youths who should volunteer to offer assistance during national emergency such as demonstrated in the fight against COVID-19, elections, national census among others.
He admonished them to serve their fatherland as good ambassadors of the NYSC and avoid every act of misconduct that could endanger their personal security.
“Don’t cut corners, as your actions today can haunt you tomorrow. Serve as good ambassadors, be security conscious and avoid night movements.”
“If you must travel, get approval from the NYSC and board vehicles from authorised motor parks only.”
“When it is dark, pass the night in a military or police barracks with your NYSC Identification Cards”, he added.
The Director-General also advised the Corps Members to add value to their host communities by providing laudable projects that would improve their living standard.
On display were banners and placards reading; NYSC is for national unity; NYSC puts the Nation first; shun acts that divide us, among others.
