A Volunteer organisation known as the Soroptimist International Nigeria Association (SINA) has called for a renewed commitment to gender equity and inclusive development.
The association stressed that the advancement of women and girls required bolder and coordinated action.
Speaking at a press conference in Lagos, the National President, Mubarakat Augusto-Agoro noted that while the 21st century offers unprecedented possibilities through technology, education and global connectivity, persistent inequality, digital exclusion, violence and systemic barriers continue to impede progress.
She said “the conference was not just another formal engagement but a call to action aimed at redefining empowered womanhood in a rapidly evolving world.”

She emphasised the importance of amplifying the voices of girls whose futures should be shaped by their potential, not by gender-based restrictions.
The President urged participants to remain focused on bold ideas, collaborative efforts and practical solutions that enable women and girls to thrive, lead and contribute meaningfully to society.
Long Term Goal
She stated that SINA’s long-term goal was to help build a future where every woman and girl is equipped, empowered and positioned for success.
She called for more support, collaboration and funding from the government and Nigerians to enable them achieve their goals in the years ahead especially at it relates to dialogue on expanding equity and opportunity across communities.
Days of Activism
The newly elected President, Mrs. Adaku Aniebue, announced that “the organisation was joining forces with the United Nations and women’s groups globally for the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, which runs from November 25 to December 10.”
She noted that the campaign was urgent in Nigeria, where many women continue to experience various forms of abuse.
According to her, “violence against women in the country goes beyond physical assault to psychological abuse, early marriage, discrimination in the workplace and other harmful practices.”
Mrs Aniebue stressed the need for awareness, urging women to speak up and assuring them that Soroptimist International is available to support survivors.
She described women as the pillar and pride of the nation and called on Nigerians to treat them with dignity and care.
Financial Literacy
Guest speaker and CEO of KudiMata, Kathleen Erhimu, highlighted the importance of financial literacy for women and girls, noting that economic independence remains a key driver of empowerment.
She encouraged women to cultivate a savings culture to avoid financial vulnerability.
The conference is themed “Shaping Women and Girls in the 21st Century.”
