PDP Ends NEC Meeting, Resolves to Preserve Electoral Mandate

Nigeria’s main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP has concluded it’s 101st National Executive Committee, NEC, meeting in Abuja on Thursday.

The gathering of the party’s big wigs addressed key party matters, internal reforms, and strategic planning ahead of 2027 general election.

In a Communique issued at the end of the meeting, the party expressed it’s determination to preserve all the electoral mandate given to the Party by Nigerians across the country.

Consequently, NEC directed the National Working Committee to take immediate legal action to recover the seats of all serving members of the National and State Assemblies elected on the platform of the PDP but defected to another Party.

NEC also approved year 2025 Elective National Convention Schedule of Activities and Timetable.

Under the approved Timetable, the Elective National Convention to elect the next set of National Officers of the Party will hold on Saturday, 15th to Sunday, 16th November, 2025 in Ibadan, the Oyo State Capital.

NEC has however, directed the National Chairman, Umar Damagum and the National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu to officially write to inform the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of the time, venue and agenda of the Elective National Convention in accordance with the requirement of Section 82 (1) of the Electoral Act, 2022 and Part 2(12) of the Regulations and Guidelines for Political Parties, 2022

o approved the membership composition of the National Convention Committee as well as the membership composition of the National Convention Zoning Committee to ensure a successful, transparent and credible Elective National Convention

Earlier, the Meeting of the Board of Trustees (BOT) of the Party (PDP) was held ahead of the 101st National Executive Committee (NEC) consultation of the party.

This is the first time the critical organs of the PDP were meeting after the defection of many party bigwigs, including former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar.

The party’s National Working Committee met with the National Caucus, comprising governors and other critical stakeholders, at the Bauchi State Lodge, Asokoro, Abuja, ahead of the meeting.

The NEC Meeting is expected to fine-tune plans for a National convention that would pick new executives for the party, which has experienced serious turbulence in recent times.
In a welcome address, the acting National Chairman of PDP, Ambassador Umar Damagum welcome party members saying that PDP was still one and waxing strong.

“PDP is one and its waxing stronger everyday. Our members who left the party and wishto return are highly welcome” he emphasised.

The Chairman of the Board of Trustees Senator Adulphus Wabara represented by the former governor of Kaduna State Ahmed Markarfi says ” this NEC which many didn’t belive will take place is taking place legally and constitutionally.”

The Chairnan of BOT added that the main agenda was to have a successful convention where the leaders of the party would emerge to move the party forward and that the outcome of the convention would determine the future of Nigeria.

On his part, the Chairman PDP governors Forum, Senator Bala Mohammed said the leadership of PDP are working assidiously behind the scenes to ensure a successful outcome of the convention, and that while the party is ready to welcome back all those who left the party, PDP would not continue to condone indicipline.

NEC restates that the PDP as the leading opposition Party remains open in working with other well-meaning and like-minded citizens in the collective effort to rescue the nation from the ruling All Progressives Congress APC administration.
