Former Anambra State Governor and 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Mr. Peter Obi, has formally flagged off the party’s campaign for the November 8, 2025, Anambra State governorship election, reaffirming his commitment to contest the 2027 presidential election.

Speaking at a rally held at the All Saints Anglican Cathedral field in Onitsha on Friday, Obi presented the LP governorship candidate, Dr. George Moghalu, and his running mate, Professor Ifeoma Okaro, as the team best suited to deliver people-oriented governance in the state.

Obi used the occasion to clarify his political stance amid recent speculations linking him exclusively to the African Democratic Congress (ADC). He explained that while he and other LP lawmakers are part of an opposition coalition that has adopted ADC as a strategic platform for the 2027 presidential election, he remains fully committed to the Labour Party, especially regarding the Anambra poll.

“If anyone asks where Peter Obi belongs today, tell them Peter Obi is in the Labour Party. The coalition is for the future, 2027. But today, we are LP members, and our mission is to begin the journey to good governance right here in Anambra,” Obi said.

He declared his presidential ambition for 2027 with characteristic resolve:

“Yes, I am in the race. I’m not stopping anyone else from running, but I am fully in, and no one does it better than me,” he said.

Obi emphasised that credible leadership must start from the grassroots and called on the people of Anambra to vote for the Labour Party to set the tone for national transformation.

Describing Moghalu as “soft-spoken, focused, and an achiever,” Obi said the LP candidate represents the values of transparency, empathy, and service that the state urgently needs. He also hailed Prof. Okaro as a symbol of inclusive leadership and gender equity.

In his address, Dr. Moghalu pledged to run a transparent and development-driven administration grounded in equity and compassion.

“We will not enforce taxes with pestle-wielding touts. We won’t use security agents to intimidate or suppress the opposition. Instead, we will institutionalize agriculture, empower youth through skills training, and revolutionize education in Anambra,” he said.

Professor Okaro echoed her principal’s vision, promising to uphold the values of integrity and inclusive governance.

The LP’s Anambra State Chairman, Ugochukwu Emeh, called for unity among party loyalists and urged citizens to embrace a shared commitment to transformative leadership.

“Let us unite with purpose and resolve to shape a brighter and more inclusive Anambra. Together, we move forward—for the people, and with the people,” Emeh said.

Key Labour Party figures at the event included Senator Victor Umeh (Anambra Central), Senator Tony Nwoye (Anambra North), and Uchenna Okonkwo (representing Idemili North/South Federal Constituency). They all endorsed Moghalu’s candidacy, praising his integrity and leadership experience.

Umeh described Obi as “the soul of progressive politics in Nigeria,” while asserting that Moghalu has the pedigree to replicate the success of Obi’s past administration.

The event officially marked the launch of Labour Party’s campaign for the 2025 Anambra governorship race, with Obi urging voters to “begin the process of reclaiming Nigeria” by voting LP at the state level.
