The Labour Party, LP has called on the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission, PLASIEC to be free, fair and credible before, during and after the Local Government Election.
The Labour Party made the call ahead of the October 9th Local Government elections in the State.
The member representing Barkin Ladi/Riyom Federal Constituency and Chairman of the Campaign Council of the LP in the State, Dalyop Chollom  stated this during a media conference in Jos the Plateau State Capital.
Chollom commended the State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang for his inclusive and human-oriented policies since the assumption of office on May 29, 2023.
“I must admit that your efforts towards fostering a harmonious environment, through good policies and strategies that promote interfaith understanding, community engagement, social cohesion, and, above all, peaceful coexistence, have been truly remarkable. Indeed, your style of leadership has been instrumental in addressing the complexity of our diverse society, ensuring that every citizen feels valued and respected,” he said.
He emphasised the crucial need for fairness in the upcoming elections as it would further strengthen democracy.
“The PLASIEC under Plangji Daniel Chishak must adhere to its statutory mandate and provide a level playing field for all political parties. The assurances of free and fair elections must be upheld in practice. Any deviation from neutrality would undermine the confidence of the Plateau electorate,” he stated.
Addressing rumors about Labour Party candidates withdrawing from the race,  Chollom rejected the claims and also condemned the vandalism of the Party’s billboards and banners throughout the State, describing the acts as undemocratic.
“Let me make it categorically clear that the Labour Party is contesting all positions—Chairmanship and Councilorship—in the state. None of our candidates have stepped down for anyone. The spread of such false information is appalling and must be refuted. The destruction of our campaign materials is unacceptable. It is uncivil and stands against the values of democracy,” he stated.
He called on PLASIEC to promptly convene a stakeholders’ meeting to address any concerns regarding the elections as it would assist in resolving any lingering issues and restoring public confidence in the electoral process.
“PLASIEC should strictly adhere to its statutory mandate of conducting free, fair, and transparent elections and uphold the laid-down standards in order to fulfill the assurances of the Executive Governor regarding the State-wide exercise, which should reflect the will of the masses” he stated.
He appealed to the people within Barkin Ladi/Riyom Federal Constituency and by extension, the entire Plateau electorate, to come out en masse and vote for the candidates of the Labour Party in the forthcoming October 9th, 2024 elections.
