Security forces in Jos have foiled an attempt to spark unrest, detaining twelve individuals as authorities ramped up measures to maintain peace in Plateau State following recent tensions.

The Plateau State Commissioner of Police, Bassey Ewah, revealed that the arrests were made shortly after Jumat prayers in the Zololo area of Jos, the state capital in North Central Nigeria. According to him, the suspects allegedly tried to incite disturbances but were swiftly intercepted by security personnel already on alert.

“Within about 30 minutes after prayers, some individuals around Zololo attempted to cause trouble, but our officers were prepared. We arrested 12 of them. They were carrying sticks and trying to move toward the Nasarawa area, but we responded promptly,” Ewah stated.

He emphasised that those in custody would face prosecution, stressing that law enforcement agencies would not tolerate actions capable of undermining public order.

“They are currently in our custody and will be dealt with according to the law. We remain committed to enforcing peace and stability,” the CP revealed.

Ewah explained that the arrests formed part of broader security efforts strengthened after the recent visit of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which led to an increased deployment of personnel across the state.

He noted that additional reinforcements, including four mobile police units and over 300 officers, had been deployed, alongside support from other security agencies.

The Commissioner also disclosed that joint patrols involving multiple security outfits were ongoing across Plateau State to ensure rapid response to any threats.

“At present, security agencies are conducting coordinated patrols across key areas, responding swiftly to any signs of trouble,” he said.

While describing the Jumat prayers as largely peaceful, Ewah warned that certain elements were still intent on causing instability but assured residents of the police command’s readiness to counter such threats.

He further reiterated the enforcement of existing restrictions, including the curfew starting at 3 p.m., as well as the ban on commercial motorcycles and limits on tricycle movements.

Ewah commended the Plateau State Government for its support and expressed optimism that continued collaboration among security agencies would help sustain peace in the region.
