President Bola Tinubu has lauded the Armed Forces of Nigeria for their professionalism, courage and resilience in safeguarding the nation’s security and interests, both at home and abroad.

Speaking on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (Rtd), made the commendation at the Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day (AFCRD) Regimental Dinner and Awards Night, held at the Armed Forces Officers Mess in Abuja.

He praised officers and men of the Armed Forces for confronting asymmetric threats with conventional valour, often under the most demanding operational conditions.

General Musa noted that peace and security are not abstract ideals but hard-won outcomes achieved through vigilance, sacrifice and unwavering dedication.

He emphasised that Nigerian troops continue to put their lives on the line in defence of the nation’s sovereignty, reaffirming the government’s appreciation of their commitment and selfless service.

The Defence Minister stressed that the “Remembrance” aspect of the occasion remains its cornerstone, as the nation pauses to honour fallen heroes who paid the ultimate price in answering the call to duty.

He said their names are etched not only on monuments but in the very fabric of Nigeria’s national identity.

He also paid tribute to the families of the fallen, acknowledging the enduring burden borne by spouses, children and loved ones.

He described their courage as the “unsung verse” in the nation’s anthem of sacrifice, assuring them that the legacy of their departed heroes remains a national responsibility.

On the awards presented during the ceremony, the Minister said they represent a tangible expression of institutional gratitude, recognising exceptional courage, meritorious service and unwavering commitment to duty.

He congratulated all awardees, urging them to wear the honours with pride and allow them to inspire even greater service.

Drawing from his experience as a former Chief of Defence Staff, General Musa said he understands the realities and challenges faced by troops on the ground, while reaffirming the government’s resolve to continue supporting the Armed Forces in fulfilling their constitutional mandate.

He further commended the Chief of Defence Staff for his sterling leadership and the excellent organisation of the event, while also praising the Service Chiefs for their professionalism, cooperation and commitment to jointness and operational effectiveness, as he reaffirmed that the sacrifices of fallen comrades will forever remain in the conscience and proud history of the nation.

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Olufemi Oluyede, emphasised that the Armed Forces of Nigeria cannot succeed in preserving the nation’s heritage and security without the active support of the broader society, noting that sustainable peace requires a collective national effort.

According to him, the way forward lies in a whole-of-society approach, which forms the core of his military strategic philosophy for the Nigerian Armed Forces.

He emphasised the need to deepen partnerships with local communities and strengthen cordial collaboration with sister security agencies to effectively confront terrorism and all forms of criminality threatening national peace and democracy.

General Oluyede observed that despite daunting challenges, Nigerian troops have continued to prevail on the battlefield and win the hearts and minds of citizens through professionalism and sacrifice.

He said “their actions have helped bridge gaps between the military and the civil populace, replacing mistrust with confidence, pride and mutual respect”.

The Defence Chief also recognised the families of military personnel, describing their quiet sacrifices and unwavering support as a critical pillar of operational effectiveness.

He noted that the moral support provided by families gives troops the strength and patriotic resolve required to discharge their duties with determination and resilience.

He further described the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day Regimental Dinner Night as one of the most cherished military traditions, blending solemn remembrance with fellowship, discipline and pride.

“The occasion serves as a reminder that the nation’s freedom was built on the sacrifices of fallen heroes and is sustained by those who continue to hold the line, deserving the gratitude and honour of a grateful nation,” he added.
