A Nigerian University, Nasarawa State University, Karu, NSUK is set to confer an honorary doctorate on Tanzania’s President Samia Hassan at its eighth Convocation.
At the event, Eighty-two Students will be bestowed with First class degrees as over 25, thousand students graduate.
Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Sa’dat Hassan Liman stated this at a pre-convocation press briefing in Keffi, Nasarawa State.
Professor Liman said “the development comes as the university celebrates its Silver Jubilee marked with excellence, transformational leadership, and visionary achievement.”
The graduating students were drawn from 11 faculties, which run 83 undergraduate courses and 104 post graduate programme.
Professor Liman said; “The 25th anniversary is worth celebrating, as the university has grown in leaps and bounds, citing among others the world-class 2024 Times Higher Education ranking, where NSUK emerged as the 36th best university in Sub-Saharan Africa and the 2025 SDGs recognition for promoting inclusive and quality education.
“The university also emerged as the 8th best university in Nigeria. That is among both federal, state, and private universities. It also emerged as the second best state university in Nigeria.”
Notable personalities will be awarded with honourary degrees this week Saturday, including Abdulsamad Rabiu, Chairman of the BUA group, and Ahmed Adamu for their eminent contribution to the growth and development of the society
According to Professor Liman, “two convocation lectures will be held on Friday the 10th, where Dr. Umar Bindir will present the Silver Jubilee Lecture themed “From Knowledge to Wealth Creation, Pathway for Revitalizing Nigerian Tertiary Institution Systems while Professor Patrick Lumumba will present another topic, “University’s WW2Leadership of Africa Renaissance, Reimagining Knowledge for Development in the 21st Century.”
“These two lectures will take place on Friday in the morning and in the evening,” she said
Furthermore, five donors have agreed to build facilities for the university, which includes: ICT hub, furniture making facility for the entrepreneurship, and a workshop. Projects already completed and donated to school will also be commissioned on Saturday, among which are: e-library, road projects, and an alumni secretariat.
Professor Liman said that part of the activities includes; a dinner for the Alumni to draw their attention to projects as the University has produced well meaning Nigerians, workforce that are contributing to the development of the country at the state and federal levels, especially because of its proximity to the nation’s capital, Abuja.
As part of the programme, which commenced on the 8th and will end on the 11th, Professor Liman said the university had organised a health and sanitation outreach for neighbouring communities. She said that a novelty football match has been scheduled between the university and neighbouring Bingham University to build cordial relationships.
“The Keffi community and the Angwanlambu community were very happy, excited, and satisfied with our health and sanitation outreach,” she said.
Professor Liman emphasised the university’s growth, noting that it has expanded from two to 11 faculties, with significant improvements in infrastructure, academic excellence, student enrolment, and staffing.
She also commended the founding fathers, pro-chancellors, and past vice-chancellors.
