Senate Holds Zonal Public Hearing On Constitution Review

The Nigerian Senate, through its Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution is set to organise a comprehensive 2-day Zonal Public Hearing across country’s geo-political zones.

The public hearing, scheduled for between July 4-5th, 2025, is aimed at gathering Nigerians’ input on the proposed constitutional amendment.

According to the Chairman of the Committee, Senator Jibrin Barau the hearing will hold simultaneously in Lagos (South West), Enugu (South East), Ikot Ekpene (South South, Jos (North Central) And Maiduguri, (North East), except Kano (North West), which was postponed till later date.

Senator Barau said the constitution review will examine critical national issues, including local government autonomy, electoral and judicial reforms, state creation, state police and inclusive governance among others.

Senator Barau, who is also the Deputy Senate President said although, about 59 bills and 31 proposals already at the disposal of the Committee, but more are still expected from any quarters that want to contribute.

He stressed the importance of the public engagement in shaping the country’s constitution, calling everyone to participate during the zonal public hearing.
