African champions Senegal lost 3-2 to England in the knockout stages of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, bowing out of the competition after Jordan Henderson, Harry Kane and starlet Bukayo Saka broke African hearts at the Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor, Qatar.
England started with captain Harry Kane in attack, with Bukayo Saka and Phil Foden supporting on the wings. Senegal featured Boulaye Dia leading the line for the Africans, with Ismaila Sarr and Krepin Diatta on the flanks.
After a slow start, England midfielder Jude Bellingham set up Jordan Henderson to open the scoring in the 38th minute, placing the ball past Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.
England pressed on and were rewarded just before halftime.
After a counter-attack started by Bellingham, striker Kane scored his first goal of the tournament, firing a ferocious shot past goalkeeper Mendy to extend England’s lead.
Senegal couldn’t contain England’s attack and it was the same story in the second half.
In the 57th minute, Arsenal winger Saka beautifully lifted the ball past the oncoming Mendy from a Foden cross, putting the icing on the cake to complete England’s memorable victory over the African champions, Senegal.
England’s charge to the quarter-finals was complete, beating Senegal 3-0 as the referee blew the final whistle.
The result sets up a brain-bursting World Cup quarter-final against defending champions France, on the world’s biggest stage in sports.
