Serie A: Osimhen’s Double Sends Napoli 16 points Clear

A double from Super Eagles of Nigeria and Napoli striker Victor Osimhen ensured the Serie A league leaders secured a 3-0 victory against Spezia, moving 16 points clear of second-placed Inter Milan at the top of the table, at the Stadio Alberto Picco in La Spezia, Italy.

Spezia started with a front-two of Daniele Verde and Eldor Shomurodov, while the visitor featured the in-form Osimhen in attack and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Hirving Lozano on the flanks.

The hosts were defensively sound in the first half as it ended 0-0 However,  just two minutes into the second half Spezia gifted Napoli a penalty after Defender Arkadiusz Reca handled the ball in the box. Winger Kvaratskhelia stepped up and dispatched the spot kick into the net.

Osimhen had a goal ruled out in the 62nd minute for pulling back Mattia Caldara, but the Nigerian international remained determined and extend Napoli’s lead moments later.

He rose highest above both Spezia goalkeeper Bartlomiej Dragowski and defender Caldara when the ball was in the air and headed in his first in the 68th minute.

Five minutes later, Osimhen scored another and it was from another defensive blunder in the Spezia box.

Spezia gifted the ball to Kvaratskhelia, who squared for Osimhen to score his 16th league goal in 17 appearances as Napoli are looking to  make history by winning its first league title in 33 years after the late Diego Maradona led them to their last triumph in 1990.

The result sent Napoli 16 points clear at the top of Serie A, followed by Inter Milan with 40 points who are to face rivals AC Milan  later in the day.

Spezia remained five points above the relegation zone.
