The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Sokoto State Branch, has called for effective coordination and cooperation among security agencies to ensure the just and expeditious administration of justice in the country.

The state NBA Chairman, Barrister Muhammad Nuhu, made the call in a communique at the end of the Law Week celebration in Sokoto State.

Barrister Muhammad commended the efforts of security agencies in tackling banditry and associated terrorist activities but called for more towards ensuring a crime-free society in Nigeria.

“A trustworthy relationship between security agencies in Nigeria and the public is the basis of effective security administration, especially for effective criminal investigation.

“So, the Security agencies should maintain the confidence of the public in various ways such as honestly handling citizens’ requests, responding quickly to citizens’ complaints and providing proper victim protection and support,” he said.

He noted that corruption was the reason for the sustained insecurity in Nigeria, which become a national challenge that needs to be tackled.

Barrister Muhammad also called for the collective effort of different professional groups involved in bringing sanity to the Nigerian System of Governance to form a common agenda in fighting corruption, tribalism and other related offences.

“Nigerians should be seen to move forward and get rid of evil forces that are determined to pull the county down.

“This can successfully be done when professional associations have a common agenda of liberating the country from the hands of the oppressors,” he added.

He further said professionals and staff of the Judiciary in Nigeria should be provided with continuing and on-the-job training to improve their professional skills and knowledge “especially in this time of rapid development in science and technology, Information and Communication Technology as well as globalization.”

The Sokoto state NBA Chairman emphasised the need for Nigeria to draw lessons from other countries on fostering Judicial Professionalism. He noted that upholding the integrity of the Judiciary is paramount, as it serves as the ultimate recourse for the common citizen.

The NBA Law Week in Sokoto commenced from the 3rd to 8th of May 2024 with the theme: “Professionalism and Nation Building” which comprised daily activities that raised awareness of legal services, the role of lawyers in the administration of justice and celebration of good works in private and public interest lawyering.
