Sokoto State: Student Forum Urges Lecturers to Suspend Strike

The Sokoto State Student’s Leaders Forum, has urged Sokoto State University Chapter of Academic Staff Union to suspend the solidarity strike with the National body of the Union.

National President of the Forum, Mr Alkasim Garba, made the call at a press briefing in Sokoto State North West Nigeria.

Mr Garba said the strike action has impacted negatively in education, security, and other sector of the economy in the country.

He said the strike action had also increased the scourge of drugs abuse and rendered youth idle which makes them available for any means of good or bad purposes.

According to him, the forum stand with the Union for standing to ensure federal government implement 2009 agreement it entered with National Union, but states universities has nothing to do with the agreement.

“We all acknowledged the sacrifice of the Union and it’s commitment to saving the Nations’ Education Sector from total collapse.

“But here in Sokoto the Government have no any labour dispute with the Union and National Strike Action.

“Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has approved salaries and allowances of all categories of employees not only for Sokoto State University, but all tertiary institutions.

“Therefore, we see no justification for the Academic Staff Union of Sokoto State University Chapter to continue on the strike action embark by the national body,” Garba said.

The National President added that solidarity strike should not be indefinite “therefore we call on the Union as matter of urgency to suspend the strike and allow students return to their normal classes activities.”

Mr Garba demand Academic Staff Union to revisit their strategy and weigh the import of their decision on the youth and future of education in the country.

The National President of the Forum however, urged Sokoto State government as a matter of urgency use all necessary measures to end the industrial action embark often by Sokoto State University Chapter of the Union for overall development of education in the state.
