A retired Director of Administration, Anambra Sports Commission, Joseph Umudu has called on the Nigerian Government to appoint competent persons to occupy various key positions in sports.
Umudu said this in an interview on Tuesday in Awka, the Anambra State Capital in Northeast Nigeria.
He said the appointment of competent persons in leadership positions in sports would ensure that the desired results were achieved, especially now that sports had become lucrative.
Umudu called for proper motivation in building the sports sector to an enviable heights.

“ We can gain a good reputation from the outside world by being a great sports country.
“As much as there are lots of benefits derived from being champions, then, there is every tendency of sports making our nation tourism friendly,” he said.
Umudu called on Nigerians to rise up and use their population as strength rather than burden.
“This government should ensure that the right people are put in our respective sports positions both as officials and athletes.
”We should focus on merit and put a stop to favoritism.
“Mr President has shown signs by rewarding sports women that won African titles in football and basketball, it behooves on us to put the nation’s aspiration towards sports first,” he added.
