Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, Comrade Grace Ike, has described tax reform as pivotal to Nigeria’s economic growth, fiscal sustainability and social development.

She stated this at the inaugural Distinguished Parliamentarian Lecture organised by the House of Representatives Press Corps, themed “Navigating Tax Reforms in Nigeria: Insights on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Policies.” The lecture was delivered by former Speaker of the House of Representatives and current Chairman of the National Credit Guarantee Company Ltd., Rt. Hon. Yakubu Dogara.

Comrade Ike commended the administration’s bold steps to modernise and strengthen the nation’s tax system, noting that the reforms aim to broaden the tax base and reduce over-dependence on oil revenues. She stressed, however, that the success of the reforms depends on transparency and effective use of revenues to improve infrastructure and citizens’ quality of life.

She urged government agencies to communicate policies clearly so that Nigerians understand their rights and responsibilities. She further highlighted the media’s role in fostering dialogue, providing accurate information and building trust in the reforms.

Chairman of the House of Representatives Press Corps, Gboyega Onadiran, said the lecture was introduced to bridge the gap between the legislature and the public, while Organising Committee Chairman Philip Nyiam added that the initiative positions journalists as contributors to national development beyond routine reporting.
