By Cynthia Okere, Lagos

Family, friends, colleagues and admirers from across the entertainment industry have gathered in Lagos to honour the late Nollywood actor, Alexx Ekubo, paying glowing tributes to a man many described as loving, kind-hearted and deeply devoted to God.

The emotional gathering on Wednesday attracted prominent figures from the entertainment industry, government circles and the Christian community. It marked the commencement of the actor’s funeral rites with a solemn Service of Songs.

Speakers at the event reflected on Ekubo’s life and career, recalling his generosity, professionalism and commitment to uplifting others both within and outside the film industry.

The Service of Songs formed part of a series of funeral activities organised in honour of the late actor, whose death has continued to elicit tributes from colleagues, fans and well-wishers across Nigeria and beyond.

Alexx Ekubo was widely regarded as one of Nollywood’s notable actors, earning recognition for his performances in numerous films and television productions throughout his career.

Life can change in literally any minute,” Pastor Eze said, reminding the congregation that human plans and achievements are temporary, while one’s relationship with God remains eternal.

Drawing lessons from the life of Jesus Christ, who fulfilled His earthly mission within 33 years, the cleric stressed that greatness should be measured by impact rather than longevity.

Referencing the biblical parable of the rich fool, he challenged everyone to look beyond glamour, fame, and material possessions, emphasising the need for spiritual preparedness.

‎Pastor Eze also paid tribute to the late actor’s faith journey, describing him as a man who lived purposefully and drew closer to God in the final years of his life.

Also speaking at the event, Pastor Ituah Ighodalo encouraged the bereaved family and friends to find comfort in God’s sovereignty and the hope of eternity.

He urged mourners to look beyond the pain of the loss and focus on the enduring impact of Ekubo’s life.

Former Minister of Education, Dr. Oby Ezekwesili, remembered the actor as a cheerful and decent young man whose presence brought joy to those around him.

Alex was a good young man who made everyone around him happy. He was a light that shone everywhere he went, she said.

‎Ezekwesili urged the family to remain strong and draw comfort from God as well as from the positive legacy he left behind.

‎Several Nollywood stars who shared personal experiences with the late actor also paid heartfelt tributes.

Actress Uche Nnanna, Ruth Kadiri, Chioma Omeruah, veteran actress Ebere Okaro, comedian Julius Agwu, and others described Ekubo as a man of genuine love, a pure heart, and unwavering faith.

They encouraged younger generations to emulate his kindness, humility, and commitment to God.

‎The atmosphere was further enriched by soul-lifting ministrations from renowned gospel artistes, including Nathaniel Bassey, Mercy Chinwo, Moses Bliss, and other worship ministers whose performances brought moments of reflection and worship.

The event drew an array of celebrities, government officials, church leaders, and members of the public, many of whom expressed gratitude for the impact Ekubo made during his lifetime.

According to the family, “the actor will be laid to rest on June 18, 2026, in his hometown of Arochukwu, Abia State.”

‎As tributes continued to pour in, one message resonated throughout the evening: while Alexx Ekubo’s life may have been cut short, the impact he made on countless lives will endure for years to come.
