The Nigerian Union of Pensioners has urged the government to address the long-standing issue of unpaid arrears that have plagued retired workers for several years.

The plea was made by the Chairman of the pensioners’ group, Comrade Sylva Nwaiwu, during a crucial data capture event held in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital

Comrade Nwaiwu passionately appealed to the government to extend the invaluable benefits of the health insurance scheme to retirees, as a gesture of gratitude for those who have dutifully concluded their active service to the nation.

He emphasized that this gesture was an essential component of the government’s magnanimity.

“The primary purpose of the data capture initiative is to gather fundamental information on federal government retirees, enabling a more effective and responsive approach to their needs. Added Comrade Nwaiwu

According to him, the initiative is not confined to Abuja alone, it is simultaneously unfolding across the various states of Nigeria, ensuring that no retiree is left behind.

“Despite their dedicated service to the nation, retired workers in Nigeria have been left waiting for any increments in their pensions for far too long”.

Clement Obosi, a retired director since 2014, expressed his wholehearted support for the data capture effort, hailing it as a significant step toward uniting the union for a common cause.

The Data Capturing initiative by the union holds the promise of bringing long-overdue relief and recognition to Nigeria’s retired civil servants, who have served their nation with unwavering commitment.
