The World Health Organisation (WHO) has classified a newly emerging COVID-19 variant, NB.1.8.1, as a “variant under monitoring” due to its rising prevalence and potential to evade immunity conferred by previous infections or vaccinations.
First detected in late January, NB.1.8.1 is a descendant of the Omicron JN.1 lineage, and has since gained ground in several regions across the globe.
The WHO confirmed that between April 21 and 27, NB.1.8.1 accounted for 10.7% of globally sequenced COVID-19 cases — a dramatic increase from 2.5% just a month earlier.
Global Spread and Current Impact
The variant is spreading most rapidly in the Eastern Mediterranean, Southeast Asia, and the Western Pacific.
The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has also reported a limited number of NB.1.8.1 cases, particularly among international travellers arriving in California, Virginia, Washington, and New York.
Although NB.1.8.1 appears to spread efficiently, current data does not suggest it causes more severe illness than previous variants.
Symptoms remain largely familiar — including sore throat, cough, fever, and fatigue — and existing COVID-19 vaccines continue to offer significant protection, especially against severe illness and hospitalisation.
Nigeria on Alert
There have been no reported cases in Nigeria so far, but health authorities have sounded the alarm over the risk of importation due to ongoing international travel.
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) stated it is actively monitoring the global situation and collaborating with international health bodies to track potential entry into the country.
“We are maintaining a high level of vigilance and strengthening our surveillance systems at points of entry,” an NCDC official said.
Vaccine Protection and Ongoing Research
While NB.1.8.1 demonstrates the ability to partially evade immunity, experts affirm that vaccines still offer strong protection against hospitalisation and death.
Leading manufacturers, including Pfizer and Moderna, are reportedly developing updated booster vaccines to improve protection against emerging subvariants like NB.1.8.1 and its close relative, LP.8.1.

Public Health Advice for Nigerians
Health experts are calling on Nigerians to take proactive steps to protect themselves and their communities. Recommendations include:
- Getting vaccinated or receiving booster doses if eligible
- Wearing face masks in crowded or poorly ventilated settings
- Washing hands frequently and maintaining good hygiene
- Staying home and seeking medical attention when unwell
- Following credible health updates from the NCDC and WHO
“The pandemic is not over,” one health expert said.
“New variants will continue to emerge. The key is maintaining vigilance, ensuring vaccination coverage, and adopting preventive measures.”
The emergence of NB.1.8.1 highlights the ongoing evolution of the virus and the need for sustained public health response.
Though it currently poses no greater threat of severe illness, its rapid spread and partial immunity evasion underscore the importance of staying protected.
As Nigeria continues to strengthen its surveillance and response mechanisms, citizens are urged to remain informed and act responsibly to safeguard public health.
