WHO Pledges Support for Adolescents Health in Nigeria

Towards improving the well-being of Adolescents in Nigeria the World Health Organisation is holding a two day Global Forum meeting in Abuja the nation’s capital.

The meeting aimed at providing and addressing the challenges of Adolescents in Nigeria and connect them with other Adolescents around the world.

Statistics has shown that the number of Adolescents in Nigeria is fast growing, taking up about 11% of the country’s population.

By this Statistics the Federal Government of Nigeria under the Supervision of Federal Ministry of Health and non-governmental organizations pledged their commitment in ensuring that Adolescent lives are improved in the areas of health, Education and Social welfare.

The Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Health Mrs Kachollom Daju representated by the Director Gender, Adolescent Health and Elderly Department Ministry of Health Dr, Ovuoraye John said the ministry has marked series of event towards the world largest virtual gathering for adolescent health.

“We are gathered here today because Nigeria recognizes the unique place of adolescents in our demographic composition and to leave no one in doubt that as a country the health needs and well-being of adolescents and young people is prioritized.”

The representative of the World Health Organisation Dr Joy Ufere said they will continue to support the Nigerian government to make adolescent well-being a national priority.

“We believe this Global Forum will unite adolescents and young people with policy makers and will aim to accelerate progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to adolescent health and well-being.

“WHO will continue to support the government of Nigeria efforts to make adolescent well-being a national priority and for hosting the PMNCH (Partnership for Maternal, Newborn & Child Health) to coordinate this Global Forum.”

The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Ali Pate, also delivered the Federal Government commitment statement to improve the well-being of adolescent.
