Women Affairs Minister Lauds Bashir’s Leadership, Impact, Vision

Nigeria’s Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, has commended the outgoing Director General of the Maryam Babangida National Centre for Women Development, Dr Asabe Vilita Bashir, for sterling leadership, impacts, dedication and vision.

Speaking in her office in Abuja on Bashir’s significant transition from public service into politics, the Minister said, “As she steps into a new chapter and joins the race toward the 2027 elections, we honor not just her leadership, but the impact, dedication, and vision she brought to the Center. Her time here has been marked by commitment to empowering women and creating spaces where voices are heard and futures are shaped.”

“We stand firmly in support of her aspirations and will continue to rally, mobilize, and galvanize every step of the way to see her succeed,” she added.

Dr Bashir tendered her resignation on March 31, 2026, in compliance with the Federal Government directive mandating public office holders seeking elective positions in the 2027 general elections to step down.

She handed over to the Director in charge of Training, Mrs Ebi Emezue.

Reflecting on her tenure at a valedictory session held in her honour, Bashir confirmed her intention to contest in her home state in North East Nigeria.

She stated that under her leadership, the Centre witnessed transformation in infrastructural development and improved staff welfare, boosting morale.

Bashir expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for the opportunity to serve, and to Minister Sulaiman-Ibrahim for a harmonious working relationship, while also thanking staff for their support and urging them to extend the same to her successor.

The event featured her induction into the Nigeria Women Hall of Fame in recognition of her contributions to women’s empowerment. She was also acknowledged as the first Director General to serve two terms at the Centre.

In her remarks, Acting Director General Mrs Ebi Emezue while paying tributes to Bashir’s role in repositioning the Centre and enhancing staff welfare, described the occasion as symbolic and significant.

Goodwill messages from various speakers underscored the varied dimensions of her leadership.

The Union Chairman, Mr. Taslim Atoyebi, speaking on behalf of staff, commended her visionary leadership, open door policy and her commitment to staff welfare as well as institutional development of the Centre.

Veteran broadcast journalist, Mrs Moji Makanjuola praised Bashir’s midas touch on innovation and excellence within the Centre,” highlighting her efforts in promoting Nigeria’s strategic interest in the women’s agenda both nationally and internationally.

The valedictory ceremony held in Abuja was attended by management, staff, stakeholders, and well-wishers.
