Kelechi Nwakali Debuts as Barnsley Beats Shrewsbury 2-0
Kelechi Nwakali finally made his English Football League debut in Barnsley’s 2-0 win over Shrewsbury Town in a League One fixture, marking his return to English football five years after leaving Arsenal. Despite his promising start at Arsenal as the Golden Ball winner at the 2015 FIFA U17 World Cup, work permit issues prevented him from making any first-team appearances for the Gunners, leading to loan stints in the Netherlands and Portugal before he departed in 2019.
Nwakali joined Barnsley this summer on a three-year deal but struggled with fitness, delaying his debut. Manager Darrell Clarke reintroduced him to the squad, and he made a brief appearance, replacing Luca Connell in stoppage time after Barnsley had secured victory through goals by Jon Russell and Max Watters. This marks a fresh start for Nwakali as he aims to make his mark in League One.
