Former Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority, Chief George Moughalu, has emerged as the candidate of the Labour Party for the upcoming Anambra State governorship election on November 8, 2025.
Moughalu secured a total of 573 votes, defeating his sole rival, John Nwosu, who received 19 votes during the primary election held at Finotel Hotel in Awka on Saturday.
The primary, which was overseen by the Independent National Electoral Commission and electoral observers, saw 649 delegates participate, with 601 individuals accredited. A total of 592 valid votes were cast, with five votes deemed invalid.
In his acceptance speech, Moughalu extended a hand of fellowship to his opponent, expressing confidence that with unity among stakeholders, victory in the November poll was assured.
He emphasized his readiness to challenge the incumbent governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, citing his experience in public service and politics as a key factor in his campaign strategy.
Moughalu said, “I thank the party for ensuring a fair playing field. We need to work together to promote the Labour Party agenda for the benefit of all Anambra residents. We must reach every corner of the state with our vision for a prosperous Anambra.”
The Returning Officer, Bennett Etanabena, praised the peaceful conduct of the primary and encouraged all stakeholders to support the party.
Etanabena highlighted Anambra’s potential as a Labour Party stronghold, suggesting that the state is poised to produce the next President in 2027, while affirming the party’s strong position in the region.
